Those days of overweight hand-carry luggage are over in Cebu Pacific

There was a time when passengers would try to save on check-in fees by stuffing all their items into their carry-on luggage. They then bring these overweight carry-ons into the cabin and stow them into the overhead bins. Well, it seems like Cebu Pacific has had it and now, they are fees to pay for overweight hand-carry luggage.

Cebu Pacific will be implementing a one carry-on baggage policy beginning September 1, 2021. They will also be strict with the weight and size, hence, those days of cramping your whole closet inside your hand-carry are over. The weight of your carry-on baggage must not be more than 7kg and they must fit inside the overhead bin or under the seat.

If you want to know why airlines are very particular about the maximum weight of your luggage, you might want to read this.

Fees for overweight luggage

If you have plans to continue bringing overweight hand-carry baggage, you better be ready to pay extra fees! The gate baggage fee for overweight carry-ons is at PhP 1,000 for Cebu Pacific domestic flights. This is way more expensive than checking in your luggage and just bringing the right weight on board. For Cebu Pacific international flights both short and long haul, the fees are PHP 1,500 and PHP 3,000 respectively.

However, there are exceptions. There is such thing as “extra free hand-carry items”, and these are medical equipment and equipment for infants. If you have purchased additional items at the airport, you are also exempted and will not be charged a fee.

Stick to the 7kg limit

We do encourage all passengers to really stick to the 7kg hand-carry luggage weight limit. We have also received reports from flight attendants that passengers bring hand-carry items beyond 7kg. These abled passengers even end up ordering flight attendants to stow overweight carry-on luggage into the overhead compartment of the aircraft. Cabin crew members are not obligated or mandated to stow hand-carry items of passengers into the overhead bin, especially if the passenger is an abled individual. They are just encouraged to lend assistance to PWDs, the elderly, or anyone physically challenged to lift their own luggage.

So next time you fly to Cebu Pacific, please weigh your luggage. The last thing we would want is sudden expenses due to overweight luggage. Travel lightly. There is no need to bring the kitchen sink.
