Following an outbreak of COVID-19, Nauru Airlines (ON, Nauru) has suspended passenger services into the tiny island country in Micronesia, northeast of Australia.

The airline announced it has suspended scheduled passenger services to Nauru for the next two weeks, or as further advised. Nauru Airlines normally serves Nauru from Brisbane Int’l in Australia using a B737-300, according to ch-aviation schedules data.

Air freight services to Nauru continue as normal, the airline said in a statement.

According to the World Health Organisation’s COVID-19 dashboard, Nauru on June 23 recorded 35 new cases within the last 24 hours, totalling 385 cases since January 2020, and zero deaths. About 23,000 vaccinations have been administered amongst its population of about 11,000 people.

Nauru Airlines (Australia) (ON, Brisbane Int’l) began B737-700 operations on March 31, 2022. VH-INU (msn 34538), a 16.2-year-old jet previously operated by Air China and Surinam Airways, was ferried for pre-delivery maintenance to Brisbane Int’l in late June 2021. Following lengthy preparations, it was delivered to Nauru on March 31, 2022, already carrying paying passengers and sporting the carrier’s new livery designed to resemble the Pacific nation’s flag.

The B737-700 will focus on passenger operations although it can carry additional freight in seat packs if passenger loads are light. Its first service out of Nauru was to Brisbane on April 2. However, the carrier said that it was in talks with the government about reopening and the launch of new routes with the new aircraft type.

Nauru Airlines operates all of its aircraft – the B737-700, two B737-300s, and two B737-300(SF)s – through its Australian Air Operator’s Certificate. Nauru Airlines (ON, Nauru) itself does not operate any aircraft directly.
