Hungarian start-up airline Aeroexpress Regional announces new routes

By JEAN LIM

Hungarian start-up airline Aeroexpress Regional has announced new routes connecting Hungary to the Transylvanian region of Romania.

Local media outlet Daily News Hungary reported that starting September 5, 2022, the airline will fly from Budapest to Cluj-Napoca and Debrecen to Cluj-Napoca and Targu Mures.

The new flights will be operated by Aeroexpress Regional three times a week for two months, and continuity of flights and routes will depend on passenger feedback.

The Hungary – Romania flights will be operated on the carrier’s Embraer 120 ER, which came from Air France Regional’s fleet. The aircraft has a capacity to carry 30 passengers. The airline hopes to eventually connect Central Europe cities and destinations.

In an interview with Hungarian media outlet Világgazdaság, Aeroexpress Regional founder Dániel Somogyi-Tóth said: “Hungarian regional aviation has a long history, but since the bankruptcy of Malév, this segment has remained empty for more than ten years.”

With its central base located at Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport, Aeroexpress Regional is backed by Base Airlines Zrt, a wholly Hungarian interest company founded in 1991.
